The wars between the Mongol Yuan Dynasty and the Burmese of Bagan was a major turning point in the history of Myanmar but there is actually no clear account on the event in both Burmese and Mongol/Chinese sources which themselves are not particularly clear. As a result, this is my personal attempt to reconstruct the events through what is available and fill in the blanks based on what is known during the time.
Popular impression of the war is that it was one of the many Mongol invasions in the world and that it overran the ancient Burmese Dynasty.
The conflict is actually part of the simultaneous wars waged by the Mongols in the late 13th century to finish off the surviving Chinese Song Dynasty. The simultaneous conflict included the invasion of modern day Vietnam and other parts of the region. Rather than a full military conquest of Burma, the Mongol invasions could be argued that they were more of punitive expeditions.
The invasions sparked a series of political developments in Burma and in many ways is seen as the period where ancient Burma ended and brought about the States that directly influenced modern Bama, Mon and Rakhine cultures.

မာကိုပိုလို (Marco Polo ) (၁၂၅၄ – ၁၃၂၄) သည် ဗီးနက်ရှင်း သမ္မတနိုင်ငံမှ ကုန်သည်တစ်ဦးဖြစ်ပြီး ဥရောပသားများအား အလယ်အာရှနှင့် တရုတ်ပြည်ကို သိရှိလာစေသည့် မာကိုပိုလို ခရီးသွားမှတ်တမ်းကို ရေးသားခဲ့သူ ဖြစ်သည်။ သူသည် ကုန်သွယ်မှု လုပ်ငန်းများကို သူ၏ဖခင် နီကိုလို ပိုလိုနှင့် ဦးလေး မာဖဲယို ပိုလိုတို့ထံမှ သင်ယူခဲ့ပြီး ၎င်းတို့နှင့်အတူ ပိုးလမ်းတလျှောက် အာရှသို့ ခရီးနှင်စဉ်တွင် တရုတ်ပြည်၌ ထိုစဉ်က အုပ်စိုးမင်းမူသည့် ယွမ်မင်းဆက် ကူဗလိုင်ခန် မွန်ဂိုဘုရင်နှင့် တွေ့ဆုံခဲ့သည်။ ဗီးနစ်သို့ ပြန်ရောက်ပြီးနောက် ဂျီနိုဝါတိုက်ပွဲတွင် အဖမ်းခံခဲ့ရသည်။ အကျဉ်းကျနေစဉ်အတွင်း သူ၏ခရီးသွား အတွေ့အကြုံကို အကျဉ်းဖော်အား ပြောပြကာ ရေးသားစေခဲ့သည်။ ၁၂၉၉ ခုနှစ်တွင် မာကိုပိုလိုသည် အကျဉ်းထောင်မှ လွတ်မြောက်လာကာ ချမ်းသာကြွယ်ဝသည့် ကုန်သည် တစ်ဦးဖြစ်လာသည်။ မာကိုပိုလိုသည် ၁၃၂၄ ခုနှစ်တွင် ကွယ်လွန်ပြီး စိန့်လော်ရင်ဇို ဘုရားကျောင်းတွင် ဂူသွင်းမြှုပ်နှံထားသည်။
မာကိုပိုလိုတို့၏ ခရီးစဉ်သည်လည်း ကိုလံဘတ်စ်ကဲ့သို့သော နောက်မျိုးဆက် စူးစမ်းလေ့လာသူများအဖို့ နမူနာဖြစ်ခဲ့သည်။
