Twantay Canal
The Twante Canal is a canal that connects the Toe River, a tributary of the Ayeyarwady River, with the Yangon River. The 35-kilometre (22 mi) long Twante Canal is widely used as a waterway connecting Yangon City and the Ayeyarwady Valley. Twante City is located about halfway along the canal, hence the name Twante Canal. Until the construction of roads between Yangon and the Ayeyarwady Valley in the 1990s, the Twante Canal was the shortest and fastest waterway and was widely used.
The lack of regular maintenance of the Twante Canal has led to silting and narrowing of the canal over the years. The canal mouth has widened to 600 feet (180 meters) in 2010 due to erosion. Despite the damage, there are no plans to build concrete dikes to maintain the canal mouth, and there are also problems with the navigation system.
History
Construction of the Twante Canal began in 1903, during the British colonial period, and was completed in 1915. It was built through the Khanawut Stream, which flows into the Yangon River, to the Toe River, a tributary of the Ayeyarwady. When completed, ships of the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company, Ltd., which handled almost all inland shipping in British Burma , used the Twante Canal to sail daily from Yangon to the Ayeyarwady Delta and upper Myanmar. The canal was wider and deeper than when it was built, and from 1935 onwards it was opened to large steamships bound for Mandalay. Previously, these ships had to sail out to sea from the Yangon River to Mandalay and then re-enter the wide Ayeyarwady estuary to pick up rice. #wikipedia

The construction of the Shwe San Daw Pagoda in Twante began on the full moon day of Ta Saung Mone in the year 114 of the Maha Sakkaraj. The dedication of the umbrella was completed on the full moon day of Tagu in the year 123. In the year 111 of the Maha Sakkaraj, when the Buddha was on a pilgrimage to the Sudhammapura region, Muttama, and Zin Kyai, he gave two hairs to the merchants of Tikkha Gyanya, Thagar Gyanya, and Sumana Thera, who had migrated from the island of Ceylon and lived there six miles east of Twante (Kwante), who had come from a place called Khapinnege. In memory of the two hairs that he had given, King Samin Htaw Banyarman built the Shwe San Daw Pagoda on Meruda Hill.
