China is facing a host of water-related problems, especially in rapidly growing urban areas. But an innovative new concept known as the Sponge City is trying to tackle the issue. By carefully managing rain and wastewater, it aims to fight water pollution, scarcity, and flooding.

China has chosen 30 key trial locations, including Haikou and Jinhua. But is it really possible to meet the water demands of megacities like Shenzhen? And, if so, could Sponge Cities be the future of urban water management?

China is building ‘Sponge City’ – a nature-based solution to tackle flooding. Sponge City is an urban planning concept that relies on wetlands and green spaces instead of building dams and floodwalls.

Flooding and water shortages are intensified by climate change effects. Since 2008, twice the number of Chinese cities were affected by floods. While extreme droughts have also become a critical problem since the late 1990s.

So, China introduced the sponge city concept that focuses on green infrastructures, like wetland areas, rooftop plants and rain gardens. This environmental design will hold, clean, and drain water in a natural way.

ow can we work with water, rather than against it, to prevent flooding? Professor Kongjian Yu of Peking University, a pioneer of the “sponge city” concept, dives into holistic, nature-based solutions that can be used in water management. He describes how water is like a beast when it’s backed into a corner: it always wins. But if we can adapt and mitigate, we can work with water to solve the problem both locally and globally. Drawing on the story of how he almost drowned as a child during monsoon season, he advocates for naturalized waterways, which can capture carbon as well as act as a sponge to absorb excess water. He envisions a world where everyone can participate in the sponge cities concept!

What happens when a city experiences a lot of rain? Instead of seeping into the ground as it would in a forest or grassland, all the water has nowhere to go. After a large storm that disrupts a city’s drainage system, the precipitation ends up floating, often causing destructive flooding.

But what if we could build stunning cities that act like sponges and save thousands of lives along the way? Well, Germany and China are already underway in creating those systems.

These systems are known as Sponge cities. Sponge cities use green architecture solutions designed to soak up excess water, just like a sponge. Sponge cities are made up of absorbent pavement and roads, large green spaces filled with interconnected waterways, and areas that act like parks when dry but wetlands when water needs a little extra space.
