The Wildlife -This bird builds cities—one mud pellet at a time.
The Cliff Swallow is an architect of the avian world. Found across North America, these birds create gourd-shaped mud nests in tight clusters under bridges, cliffs, and eaves—forming noisy colonies of hundreds. Each nest can contain over 1,000 tiny mud pellets.
With shimmering dark-blue backs and square tails, they dart through the air in tight, acrobatic flight, catching insects midair with precision. Cliff Swallows are also known for their long migrations—some travel over 11,000 km to wintering grounds in South America.
What drives them to return to the same nesting sites year after year?
