Nearly 2,000 years ago, the Romans built what many consider to be the world’s first shopping mall.
Constructed between 100 and 110 AD, Trajan’s Market was a massive, multi-level complex in the heart of Rome. 🏛️
It was a true marvel of engineering. The architect, Apollodorus of Damascus, ingeniously built the entire structure into the side of the Quirinal Hill, creating a sprawling semi-circular complex.
The market featured over 150 individual shops, called “tabernae,” on its lower levels. These shops opened directly onto the street for easy access.
Citizens could buy a huge variety of goods, from exotic spices and silks imported from the East to everyday staples like fresh produce and fish. 🛒
The upper levels of the market served a different purpose. They housed administrative offices for managing trade and government business, making it a center for both commerce and civic life.
While long attributed to Emperor Trajan, some recent research suggests his predecessor, Emperor Domitian, may have actually started the project, with Trajan finishing and expanding it.
The Great Hall, a massive vaulted space, likely hosted public speeches and gatherings, cementing the market’s role as a social hub for the people of Rome.
Today, much of the structure still stands, a testament to the incredible skill of Roman builders. It now houses a museum for visitors to see what life was like in the ancient city.
