Myanmar Earthquake Death Toll Crosses 2700 , Resxue Operations Intensify / CNBC TV18 2 April 2025 death toll from the devastating earthquake in Myanmar has crossed 2700. More than 3900 people have been injured in the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that hit the region on March 28. The quake has also triggered humanitarian crisis due to shortage of food & proper healthcare facilities.

MMandalay, the second-largest city in Myanmar, and its neighboring city, Sagaing, experienced an M7.7 earthquake on March 28 (Figure 1). This earthquake is attributed to rupture along the Sagaing Fault, the major fault running across central Myanmar. Historical records indicate that this fault has ruptured in the past. In collaboration with our Myanmar colleagues, we analyzed the seismic hazard in Myanmar and concluded that the Sagaing Fault has the potential to generate an M8-class earthquake, resulting in a high seismic hazard potential in the surrounding area. Additionally, both Sagaing (Figure 2) and Mandalay (Figure 3) are situated on sedimentary regions, which could experience even stronger ground shaking due to site amplification. 🙁
