The Cycle of Rice Rituals of Myanmar

Scene 1: The Story of Pone Ma Kyi Shinma Nat (Myanmar Rice Goddess)
Myanmar farmers believe that Pone Ma Kyi Shinma Nat is a rice goddess and the guardian spirit of farmland and farming. It is the tradition of Myanmar farmers to pay respect to Pone Ma Kyi Shinma Nat by making an effigy of her out of straw and putting the mask of an ogress on the head of the effigy, as it is believed that she was an ogress before she became a nat (Myanmar spiritual being). At the beginning of the farming season, the farmers provide the Pone Ma Kyi Shinma Nat figure with various offerings for her to create good weather and to bring a bountiful harvest.
Scene 2: The Royal Ploughing Ceremony in Myanmar
According to the Buddha Vamsa story, the first Royal Ploughing Ceremony was held at the time of King Suddhodana, the father of Prince Siddartha (who later became the enlightened Gautama Buddha). It is mentioned in the chronicles that Myanmar kings followed this tradition and celebrated the Royal Ploughing Ceremony starting from the Bagan Period (10th-12th century CE) up to the end of the Konbaung Period (19th century CE). During the time of Myanmar kings, it was usually held on the 1st waning day of the Myanmar calendar month Na-yone (May). Marking the beginning of the rice-growing season, the aim of the Royal Ploughing Ceremony was to ensure a good harvest. It is also believed that another aim of celebrating the Royal Ploughing Ceremony is to propitiate the rain god Moe Khaung Kyawzwar Nat, who can create rain for a prosperous rice growth.
Scene 3: Traditional Dance Demonstrating the Work of Farm Ladies during the Rice Growing Season
This traditional dance is usually performed by young village girls in rural villages at the beginning of the rice-growing season to cheer on the farm ladies who are working in the ploughed field.

Tayub dance is one of the genres in Javanese dance that flourished among rural communities and has often functioned as a ritual dance related to the fertility ceremony in honour of Dewi Sri. It is performed by women, both young and old, in a rice-planting ritual (tandur), in picking or cutting rituals (harvest), as well as in the ritual process of putting the rice inside a house or barn. Javanese people believe that the goddess is present in such rituals through the bodies of Tayub dancers. In addition, Tayub dance is often performed in other ceremonies, such as male circumcision rituals, weddings and votive offerings (ngluwari ujar). The dance performance is accompanied by a set of Javanese gamelan musical ensemble: laras Slendro or Pelog, while the gendhing used are Ayak-ayak, Sampak, Ladrang Pangkur, Semingin, Rujak Jeruk and Godril.
Synopsis / Description
The dance illustrates the activities of farmers in the planting ritual (tandur). The process of the ceremony starts with the performance of the pelandang, appealing to the angels to be present in the planting ceremony. The presence of the angels is symbolized by the performance of the Gambyong dance performed by women, accompanied by gendhing of Ladrang Pangkur laras Slendro pathet Manyura. After that, the ceremony performs Sri Tumurun, which describes the descent of Dewi Sri, led by a ritual leader. The performance of the ceremony is accompanied by various kinds of offerings, such as oran, sega krawon, santri mujung, jenang blowok, inthil, parem, tebu wulung, pisang, godhong walikukun, godhong apa-apa and reed tips. The purpose of the ceremony is to ask for safety so that the planting can be done safely and the seeds will grow well. To respect the presence of Dewi Sri as embodied in the Tayub dancers, the pelandang starts the rituals by dancing together with one of the Tayub dancers. After the pelandang finishes dancing, the male farmers will choose the Tayub dancers as their dancing partners. After this ritual, which is called Tayuban, the activities of cultivating the farmland and planting the seeds may start.
