Orwell in Burma : A Hanging and Shooting an Elephant

In this video, I explore three early essays by George Orwell – ‘The British Empire in Burma: How a Nation is Exploited’, ‘A Hanging’, and ‘Shooting an Elephant’. Orwell spent around 5 years in Burma in the Indian Imperial Police for the British Empire. He then returned to England and Paris where he wrote for various publications before writing Down and Out in Paris and London, followed by Burmese Days.

published in 1934. Set in British Burma during the waning days of Empire, when Burma was ruled from Delhi as part of British India, it is “a portrait of the dark side of the British Raj.” At the centre of the novel is John Flory, “the lone and lacking individual trapped within a bigger system that is undermining the better side of human nature.” The novel describes “corruption and imperial bigotry” in a society where, “after all, natives were natives—interesting, no doubt, but finally…an inferior people”.

Burmese Days was first published “further afield,” in the United States, because of concerns that it might be potentially libelous; that the real provincial town of Katha had been described too realistically; and that some of its fictional characters were based too closely on identifiable people. A British edition, with altered names, appeared a year later. Nonetheless, Orwell’s harsh portrayal of colonial society was felt by “some old Burma hands” to have “rather let the side down”. In a letter from 1946, Orwell wrote, “I dare say it’s unfair in some ways and inaccurate in some details, but much of it is simply reporting what I have seen”.

Burmese Days was George Orwell’s first novel published in 1934 which gives us insight into colonial Burma. There are various strong themes in this book which are about:

Solitude
Corruption

There’s also a lot about Burmese culture and tradition. I’ll leave it to you to watch this review and let me know what you think. As I was reading the book, I couldn’t help but feel anger towards a couple of the characters but in doing so, you realise how immersed they are into their “system”.

The name Dvāravatī is used to refer to a first-millennium culture predominantly in what is today the Central Plain of Thailand. This name has been used as such for over a century, yet there are ongoing debates about what the name implies and how it should be used. The greatest problem arises from the fact that scholars in the fields of archaeology, art history, and palaeo-linguistics use the name with different connotations and implications, causing confusion. This presentation will elaborate on these debates.

One window to understanding Dvāravatī is through the study of inscriptions composed in the Old Mon language. Old Mon inscriptions have been identified scattered around the Central Plain, the Khorat Plateau of northeastern Thailand and lowland Laos, and in the Chiang Mai-Lamphun Basin in northern Thailand. These inscriptions have received little scholarly attention, and my studies have included many inscriptions which have never been properly studied or published. They date approximately from the sixth to the thirteenth century. Tentatively, I have identified around 100 artifacts in the region inscribed in Old Mon, and this number continues to increase. They range in size from large steles with numerous lines of text to small sealings with only a few words. The majority are quite short, rarely exceeding a few lines; in nearly all cases Old Mon was utilized for composing donative texts, which were records of meritorious deeds such as the donation of resources for a religious foundation. The details of the meritorious actions are not normally described, but emphasis is given to naming the donors. The exception is the later Old Mon inscriptions of the Haripuñjaya culture in northern Thailand, where several large inscription stele have been found. These give much greater detail in a narrative fashion, and some references are made to historical events.
