Myanmar’s Economy & Potential under Democratic or the the Generals’ Rule / Grow or Wither / Lee Kuan Yew
Lee Kuan Yew sees Myanmar as a country which, despite tremendous human and natural resources, fell short due to misguided adoption of democracy on the one hand and mismanagement of the country by the generals on the other. So, let’s examine some of his insights, messages, and prognoses for Myanmar. Lee Kuan Yew also said he had written off Myanmar in his lifetime, described the generals as “dumb” when it comes to the economy, and Aung San Suu Kyi’s pursuit of liberal democracy as unrealistic for Myanmar.

Lee Kuan Yew ‘s Thoughts on Myanmar (2000 )
In 2000, Lee Kuan Yew wrote:
“Vietnam was admitted into ASEAN in 1995, Myanmar and Laos in 1997, and Cambodia in 1999. The four have some way to go to reach the level of development of the old members, and to gain acceptability as dialogue partners of the United States and the European Union.”

Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong called for Myanmar’s military to release Aung San Suu Kyi in an interview with the BBC on Tuesday (March 2). Lee said the military knows it is in the country’s best interest to reach an arrangement with the elected civilian government. He also said outsiders would have little influence on the military, as sanctions would only hurt ordinary people. Lee’s remarks come just over a month after Myanmar’s army detained Aung San Suu Kyi, the country’s elected leader.

Soldiers and Diplomacy in Burma
10 June 2013 Lunchtime Talk
Title of Event:
Soldiers and Diplomacy in Burma — Understanding the Foreign Relations of the Burmese Praetorian State
Speakers: Dr. Renaud Egreteau, Research Assistant Professor, University of Hong Kong; and Mr. Larry Jagan, South East Asia Correspondent, The National (Abu Dhabi)
Date: Monday, 10 June 2013
Time: 12:15pm – 1:30pm
Venue: Seminar Room 3-1, Level 3, Manasseh Meyer, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy
Soldiers and Diplomacy addresses the key question of the ongoing role of the military in Burma’s foreign policy. The authors, a political scientist and a former Asia editor for the BBC, provide a fresh perspective on Burma’s foreign and security policies, which have shifted between pro-active diplomacies of neutralism and non-alignment, and autarkical policies of isolation and xenophobic nationalism. The authors argue that key elements of continuity underlie Burma’s striking post-colonial policy changes and contrasting diplomatic practices. Among the defining factors here are the formidable dominance of the Burmese armed forces over state structures, the enduring domestic political conundrum and the peculiar geography of a country located at the crossroads of India, China and Southeast Asia. The book argues that the Burmese military still has the tools needed to retain their praetorian influence over the country’s foreign policy in the post-junta context of the 2010s. For international policymakers, potential foreign investors and Burma’s immediate neighbours, this will have strong implications in terms of the country’s foreign policy approach
