6- The Sea Wall That Saved the Netherlands
The Netherlands is known as a country that had to be literally reclaimed from water. This battle against the relentless element of water began as soon as people first settled in the area. The earliest water management structures, including dams, in Dutch territories were constructed during the Roman period and medieval times, when the sea level was lower than today. Over this extended period of combating floods, the Dutch have accumulated invaluable experience, which they often share with other countries.

7- Dutch proposed to dam the North Sea
Scientists from the Netherlands and Germany have proposed to construct two massive dams to protect some 25 million people from rising sea levels. The megaproject stretches between the United Kingdom, France, Norway, and would completely enclose the North Sea. So, is this plan viable or is it as overwhelming and unrealistic as it seems?

ocean has been friend and foe for as The Netherlands exist. The Dutch have long used their ingenuity to manage the water, but a perfect storm in 1916 prompted them to embark on the most ambitious project to date: to reclaim the Zuider Sea.

10- Why isn’t the Netherlands underwater / the shocking truth
Water management has been an issue in the netherlands for centuries now, and it’s not for nothing that they have dikes all over the sides of this small country. they are extremely important for europe as other countries also struggle with the upcoming water.
if we look at the map of the world, we see that most of it, is water, and it’s estimated that the world consists of the bizarre number of percent of water, which is a total of 71%.
It is therefore insane how the Netherlands have dealt with the water for all these years. and it’s even better when you consider that more than two-thirds of the Netherlands is below sea level, which means that if the Netherlands had never done anything about the water, they would have been much smaller than they already are.

Dig into the incredible engineering of the Netherlands’ Delta Works— the most sophisticated flood prevention system in the world.
—
In January 1953, a tidal surge shook the North Sea. The titanic waves flooded the Dutch coastline, killing almost 2,000 people. 54 years later, a similar storm threatened the region. But this time, they were ready. This was thanks to a massive, interlocking system known as the Delta Works— the most sophisticated flood prevention project in the world. Stefan Al dives into this marvel of engineering.

11 – Why is the Netherlands disappearing underwater
Here’s why the Netherlands may have disappeared a long time ago if it wasn’t for their clever engineering.
Because the majority of the Netherlands lies below sea level, they have spent years constructing large-scale sea defenses to push back water and protect themselves from calamities. They’ve been fairly effective at it, reclaiming over 20% of their territory from the sea and lakes. How did they pull it off? Watch our video to find out.

Mistakes, Corrections, & Clarifications
- At least one image of the 1953 flood is in the UK, not the Netherlands. However, it is the same event. 307 people in England were killed by the flood.
- At 1:03 the graphic says “1 meter above sea level” it should say “at least 1 meter above sea level”
- At 7:00 the map is missing at least one project from the Delta Works.
- The source I used that stated that about 50% of the Netherlands was reclaimed land was inaccurate. The number is closer to 17%. However, 21% of the country’s population lives in the 26% of the land located below mean sea level and about 65% of the country would be underwater at high tide if it were not for the existence and the country’s use of dikes, dunes, and pumps.

18- Why the Dutch are leaders in water defense innovation
As the climate changes, sea levels are predicted to rise, and extreme weather events are set to increase in frequency and intensity. But one European country may have the answer to keeping water at bay. CNBC’s Julianna Tatelbaum travels to the Netherlands to find out more.
19- Preparing for Floods : Adapting the Netherlands for Climate Resilience
In the IMPETUS project’s ‘Atlantic’ demonstration site in the Netherlands, our main goal is to align with national, regional and local programmes to enhance #climatechange adaptation measures. The team is developing digital #decisionsupportsystem tools for municipal spatial planners, so they can create sustainable cities and communities, with a focus on the city of Rotterdam and surrounding areas in Rijnmond and the province of Zeeland.
One of the most significant challenges that climate change presents here is the increasing risk of #flooding from #sealevelrise. The sea has always been a threat for this low-lying country, which has been subject to major flooding events throughout its history. For example, the ‘Watersnoodramp’ of 1953 was a major disaster. And it is expected that, by 2050, regional sea level will rise 15-40 cm and there will be more severe #storms. More intense #rainfall and river flooding is another challenge, as summer floods in much more recent years have reminded us.
With growing recognition that the Netherlands’ main protection – sea dikes and storm surge barriers – may no longer be sufficient in the face of climate change, the race is on for Dutch cities to take #climateaction and plan ahead with new strategies.
Our #climateimpetus #project partner Nelen & Schuurmans is helping to accelerate climate adaptation measures in the Netherlands with its flooding decision support tool.

21 – How Much of the Netherlands is Below Sea Level ?
it one quarter? One half? Three quarters? The whole country? Amazingly, many Dutch people, including some Dutch agencies, don’t really know. This video explains how the Netherlands keeps its citizens’ feet dry, offers two theories about the general confusion, and answers the question about how much of the country is below sea level—for the time being. What the Netherlands will look like in the future is a question Dr. Poldergeist will explore in an upcoming video.
