1 – Floating cities as an innovative response to climate change / DW Documentary
Sea levels are rising due to climate change. Many coastal cities are at growing risk of flooding. Architects are trying to react to this development with new ideas, such as floating cities. But this concept is not without its problems.
Architect Koen Olthuis is constructing a floating city in the Maldives, sustainably cooled with sea water. In the Netherlands, Sacha and Jan live in a waterborne section of the Steigereiland neighborhood. It’s based on a complicated feat of engineering – but also depends on cooperation and solidarity. If one home is too heavy, it raises the one next door. Yet Sacha and Jan like its collaborative nature. The residents of the floating neighborhood all love living by the water, not far from the heart of Amsterdam.
In Germany, a University of Kiel project goes even further. Biologist Martina Mühl is researching the possibility of implementing aquaculture very close to home, so residents can tap their own fresh
local supply of fish and seafood.
Hamburg and Bremen have been responding to rising tides by constructing ever higher levees. But soon even this will no longer be enough to cope with the growing impact of climate change. This documentary shows possible alternatives to levees and how we might be able to cope with the rising sea levels in the future.

7 – Yolanda Typhoon House Design for flooding and Earthquake
Yolanda Super Typhoon hit Cebu Philippines on November 8, 2013. This house design concepts may prevent damages on your house. House design that is good for Leyte and Samar or province near coastal area where houses are built near the sea. The Storm Surge caused the sea to run into the land and damages the houses. This house designs will help you during Earthquake, Typhoon, and Flooding / Storm Surge. May we adapt a better and cheaper house design that is based on this so that people lives will be safe from super typhoons like yolanda. Its so sad that about thousands people as the news said, died in tacloban city alone, the death toll is so sad and horiffic, may real estate developer offer people a better functional house design based on Earthquake, typhoon and flood. May this be a trend in real estate industry to offer houses that saves lives during calamities in Philippines. May our beloved relatives rest in peace. We should open our eyes, analyze and implement a better housing design here in Philippines.
Yolanda super typhoon take away thousands filipinos, worst than the Earthquake that hit in Bohol and Cebu, 7.2 magnitude earthquake gives me vertigo for 3 weeks, it scared me a lot thinking of our house and my family but it could have been better if we all have affordable Base Isolation Systems in our houses. For Flooding, people should have atleast 10 feet concrete columns so flood water can run freely on the ground, the ground will be a place for animals and grass / trees. For typhoon, the house roof should be curve or in a triangular shape, the wall of the houses should be slanting or curve so wind can just slide through and make less damages.
Damages of Yolanda should not happen again, human lives should be put first into the design of every structure above Earth. Help prevent and save lives. May they rest in peace, we love you all, Filipinos.

13 – How Houses Could Float
A new industry of floating infrastructure is emerging to help adapt to rising sea levels. There are two distinct approaches that are being put forth as possible solutions: retrofitting homes to be amphibious and building floating cities.
Amphibious homes can preserve the accessibility of the house and maintain the congenial front porch culture in places like Louisiana, said Elizabeth English, founder and director of The Buoyant Foundation Project.
English’s design places a steel frame beneath a house, and then below that, in the crawl space, buoyancy elements. Her team then recommends adding elements to prevent lateral movement so the home will not float away while on the surface of floodwaters. She estimated that a contractor could do such a retrofit for about $20 to $30 per square foot, but cautioned the Federal Emergency Management Agency currently discourages this type of building practice.
Modern floating cities are the brainchild of architect Bjarke Ingels. He told CNBC he hopes his Oceanix City, which is currently slated to be built in the harbor near Busan, South Korea, will be “a city that is the most resilient city you can imagine, but at the same time, the most enjoyable city that you can imagine.”
“We really hope that it will be a successful project and we would like to replicate it in other parts of the world,” Maimunah Mohd Sharif, executive director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, told CNBC of the Oceanix development. She said the world must look more into adaptation and hopes that the project can help mitigate or even solve the problem of sea-level rise.

20 – Why amphibious houses are essential in flood prone cities / Nanma Gireesh / TED X Thiruvananthapuram
What do you do when your city is hit with a deluge? How would you minimize the damage to buildings? Ever wondered what Amphibious houses were? This is where Nanma Gireesh comes in. In this talk, Nanma shares how amphibious houses are a better alternative to the standard housing in areas that are prone to natural calamities like floods, as amphibious houses take little to no damage in comparison.
Nanma is a Civil Engineer with post-graduation in Translational Engineering who co-founded an interdisciplinary consultancy firm called NestAbide, currently focussing on Amphibious housing technology and lake rejuvenation projects.
As a solution to the sinking houses in Munroe Islands, Kollam, Kerala, the concept of the amphibious house was first studied. She visited and researched on 32 amphibious houses that are built on the banks of Maas River in Maasbommel, Netherlands, with the help of few professors and natives. Taking inspiration from how Holland sees water, flood and nature, She started and is currently working on implementing the amphibious housing project in Kerala.
She is also an avid painter, dancer and nature lover. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/

25 – Construction of the world’s first Floating city in Korea
The Earth’s sea level is constantly increasing. A real flood may soon begin, because since 1880 the world’s ocean waters have risen an average of eight to nine inches. And a third of that figure, according to Climate.Gov climate change research portal, is made up of indicators over the past 25 years!
The sea level directly depends on melting glaciers due to global warming.
An increase in the planet temperature warms the oceans, so the water volume also increases. Pumping of groundwater and sewage into the seas as a result of human activity also has a strong impact. The situation will only worsen in the future. According to NOAA estimates, US water level will increase an average of another 10-12 inches by 2050. For some small islands and lowland coasts, a rise in the sea level
poses an existential threat.
According to experts, the consequences will initially be felt by small island states. Soon Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Hawaii, Maldives may be flooded.
Floods will scare away tourists, who are an important source of income for local residents.
26 – South Korea to Build World’s First Floating City
BUSAN, SOUTH KOREA — The U.N. recently signed a deal with the Korean port city of Busan to build the world’s first floating city on Busan’s coastline. Here are the details:
Business Insider reports that a historic deal was signed on Thursday, November 18 to build the world’s first ever floating city on the coast of South Korea.
The South Korean city of Busan agreed to host such a floating city with the backing of the UN Human Settlement Program and Oceanix, the company that designed the floating city.
Like many coastal cities, Busan is threatened by rising sea levels, and the floating city is designed to help such cities to expand onto the sea.
The city will be based on a collection of hexagonal platforms that float on the water.
These platforms will be strengthened by a limestone coating that’s more than twice as hard as concrete while also being buoyant.
The city is designed to survive Category 5 hurricanes.
It would also be flood proof as it is designed to rise with the sea. The floating city would produce its own food, energy and freshwater.
Cages underneath the platforms could be used to house scallops, kelp or other forms of seafood, while aquaponic systems could use waste from fish to fertilize plants.
The next step will be for Oceanix and the UN to work with Busan’s officials to fine-tune the final design of the floating habitat.
Oceanix says the whole process would take a total of three years, so it expects to see the prototype in the water by 2025.
