ဒီစာပိုဒ်ဟာ သူမတူအကျဉ်းသား (An Unlikely Prisoner)စာအုပ်ထဲက စာရေးသူ မစ္စတာ ရှောင်တာနယ် (Sean Turnell) ရေးထားတဲ့ စာသားပါ။ ဩစတေးလျနိုင်ငံသား ဘောဂဗေဒပညာရှင် ရှောင်တာနယ်ဟာ မြန်မာပြည် စီးပွားရေးအကြံပေးပါ။ သူ့ဟာ အတိုင်ပင်ခံ ဒေါ်အောင်ဆန်းစုကြည်နဲ့ စီးပွားရေးအလုပ်တွေကို ၂၀၁၆ ကနေ ၂၀၂၁ ဖေဖော်ဝါရီအထိ လက်တွဲ အလုပ်လုပ်ခဲ့သူပါ။ သူ့ကို အာဏာသိမ်းပြီး ၅ ရက်မှာ ဖမ်းပြီး ရက်ပေါင်း ၆၅၀ အကျဉ်းကျခဲ့ပါတယ်။ သူက မအလစစ်တပ်ရဲ့ ချုပ်နှောင်ရက် ၆၅၀ အတွင်း ဒေါ်အောင်ဆန်းစုကြည်ရဲ့ အခြေအနေတွေ၊ စီးပွားရေး အကြံပေး ရာထူးယူထားကာလ ၅ နှစ်တာအတွင်း မြန်မာပြည် NLD ဒေါ်စုတို့နဲ့ ပူး ပေါင်း ဆက်စပ်ပတ်သက်ခဲ့တာတွေကို သူမတူ အကျဉ်းသား An Unlikely Prisoner စာအုပ်မှာ ရေးခဲ့တာပေါ့။ အဲ့သည် စာအုပ် အခန်း ၃ စာမျက်နှာ ၅၄ မှာ စီးပွားရေးအကြံပေးဖြစ်သူ သူ့ကို ဒေါ်စုရဲ့ တခုတည်းသော တောင်းဆို ချက်က “သူကြားချင်တာတွေပဲ ခန့်မှန်းပြီးမပြောဖို့နဲ့ ကျွန်တော်နားလည်တဲ့ အခြေအနေတွေကို အမြဲတမ်း အမှန်အတိုင်း ပြောပြဖို့” ပါ …. ဆိုပြီး ရေးခဲ့တာပါ။

အခုလို တွေ့တော့ ကျွန်တော့်စိတ်မှာ အလားတူတွေကို တွေးနေမိတယ်။ ဒေါ်စုက အမှန်အတိုင်း အစီရင်ခံတာပဲ ကြိုက်တာပေါ့။ အလားတူ ဗိုလ် ချုပ်နေဝင်း၊ ဗိုလ်သန်းရွှေ၊ စောမောင်၊ ခင်ညွန့်နဲ့ မအလတို့ကြတော့ ဒေါ်စု စိတ်ထားနဲ့ပြောင်းပြန်လေ။ ဥပမာ။ ။ ဗိုလ်နေဝင်းလက်ထက်ကဆို စစ် တပ် စံပြစပါး စိုက်ခင်းများမှာ တဧက တင်း ၁၂၀ ထွက်ရှိ ဆိုပြီး လိမ်လည် အစီရင်ခံမှ ကြိုက်တာပါ။ အမှန်အတိုင်း စပါးတဧက ၃၅ တင်း ထွက်ရှိသည်လို့ စာရင်းတင်မိလိုက်ရင် အဲ့သည်ဝန်ထမ်းအလုပ်ပြုတ်ကရောလေ။ ထောင်တောင် ကျရင် ကျနိုင်ပါသေးတယ်။

ဒေါ်စုကတော့ . . ဒေါ်စု ဆိုတာကတော့ သူမတူအကျဉ်းသား စာအုပ်ထဲမှာ ရှောင်တာနယ်ရဲ့ အခေါ်အဝေါ်ပါ။ ဒေါ်စု ဆိုတဲ့ အောင်ဆန်းစုကြည်ကတော့ သူ့ကို အမှန်အတိုင်း အစီရင်ခံတာကိုပဲ ကြိုက်တာလေ။ ရှောင်တာနယ်လိုမျိုး နိုင်ငံခြားသား အကြံပေးတွေ၊ မြန်မာပြည်သား အကြံပေးတွေက မြေပြင် အခြေအနေအတိုင်း ဒေါ်စုကို အကြံပေးခဲ့ကြလို့ NLD အစိုးရ ၅ နှစ်မှာ တိုးတက်ခဲ့တာကလား။ အခု မအလ အာဏာသိမ်း ၄ နှစ်နဲ့တော့ မိုးနဲ့မြေ၊ ဆီနဲ့ရေ၊ လေယာဉ်ပျံနဲ့ ပုရွက်ဆိတ် ကွာခြားပါ့။ “သူမတူ အကျဉ်းသား” ကို ဘာသာပြန်သူကတော့ အေကေမိုးပါး။

စာရေးဆရာ “အေကေမိုး”က ၃ လ အလုပ်နားပြီးတော့တောင်မှ ဘာသာပြန်ခဲ့ရကြောင်း အမှာစာမှာ ရေးခဲ့ပါတယ်။ Burmese Democracy Development Collaboration (BCDC) က ထုတ်ဝေပါတယ်။ မျက်နှာဖုံးက သည်မော်နိုင် လုပ်တာပါ။ ၂၀၂၄ ဧပြီမှာ ပထမအကြိမ် အုပ်ရေ ၃၀၀၀ ထုတ်ဝေပါတယ်။ ထိုင်းမှာ တအုပ် ၄၀၀ ဘတ်နဲ့ ရောင်းတယ်။ အနောက်နိုင်ငံတွေမှာ ၃၅ ဒေါ်လာ တဲ့။ စာအုပ်မှာ စာမျက်နှာ ၂၅၀ ရှိတယ်။

စာအုပ်တွင်းကဖုန်းပြောနေစဉ်ဝင်လုတဲ့အခန်း

“သူမတူအကျဉ်းသား” စာအုပ်ကို ဖတ်နေရင်းက ကျွန်တော့်စိတ်မှာ အလားတူတွေကို တွေးနေမိတယ်။ ဥပမာဗျာ မစ္စတာရှောင်တာနယ်ကို ၂၀၂၁ ခုနှစ် ဖေဖော်ဝါရီ ၁ ရက်က မတရား လက်နက်အားကိုး စစ်တပ်အာဏာသိမ်းအပြီး နောက် ၅ ရက်မှာဖမ်းတယ်။ ကြိုသိလို့ ဩစတေးလျားသံရုံးကို ပြေးမယ်ကြံပြီး သူ ထွက်လာတော့ ဟိုတယ်ဧည်ကြိုရှေ့မှာ့ သူ့ကို ရဲက ထိုင်ခိုင်းထားတယ်။ ဒီအချိန် BBC သတင်းဌာနက အင်တာဗျူးဖုန်းဝင်လာတယ်။ အင်တာဗျူး ဖြေနေတုန်း ၅ မိနစ်အကြာမှာ ရှောင်တာနယ်ရဲ့ဖုန်းကို စူစူပုပ်ပုပ်နဲ့ ရဲအရာရှိက ဖုန်းကို ဝင်လုပြီး ဖမ်းလိုက်တာပဲ။

အဲ့သည်အခါ ၂၀၀၇ စက်တင်ဘာ ရွှေဝါရောင် တော်လှန်ရေး တလအလို ဩဂုတ် ၂၅ ရက်ည ကိုမင်းကိုနိုင်၊ ကိုဂျင်မီတို့ ၈၈ မျိုးဆက်ကျောင်းသား ခေါင်းဆောင် အိမ်တွေကို ဝင်ဖမ်းတုန်းက ကိုအံဘွယ်ကျော်ရဲ့ မိခင် ဒေါ်တင်တင်ဦး ကို ကျနော်က ဖုန်းခေါ် အင်တာဗျူးလုပ်တယ်။ ဒေါ်တင်တင်ဦးက “ဒီကောင်တွေ ငါ့သားကို ဖမ်းထားပြီ။ ထောင်ထဲခေါ်သွားတော့မယ်။ တအိမ်လုံးကိုလည်း မွှေနှောက်နေတယ်” လို့ ပြောပါတယ်။ ကျွန်တော်က “ရှာဖွေနေတဲ့ ရဲ တယောက်လောက်ကို ခေါ်ပေးပါ။ ဘာကြောင့်ဖမ်းသလဲ ဆိုတာ မေးချင်လို့” လို့ တောင်းဆိုလိုက်တော့ ဒေါ်တင်တင်ဦးက ” ဟေ့ ပိုင်စိုးပိုင်နင်း ငါ့အိမ်ကို ရှာနေတဲ့ကောင် တယောက်လောက် ဖုန်းလာကိုင်ပါ။ DVB က နင်တို့ကို အင်တာဗျူး လုပ်ချင်လို့တဲ့ဟေ့။ လာပါ။ တယောက်ယောက်ပေါ့။ . ……. မလာကြဘူးလား။ လာဖြေပေးကြပါဟေ့။ ဟဲ့ ငါနဲ့အနီးဆုံး ဒီတယောက် လာ လာ အင်တာဗျူး လာဖြေပေးပါဟဲ့။ (အဲ့ဒီအခါ အဖွားကြီး ပြဿနာမရှာနဲ့နော်။ ကျုပ်တို့ ဘယ်သူမှ မဖြေဘူးနော်။ တယ်လီဖုန်းကြီး လာပေးမနေနဲ့။ DVB လား။ ဘာလား။ ဘာသတင်းဌာနမှ မဖြေဘူး။ ဆိုတဲ့ ပြန်ပြောသံတိုးတိုး ကြားရတယ်။) ဒေါ်တင်တင်ဦးက “ဟဲ့ သတင်းဌာနက တရားဝင် ဗျူးတော့ နင်တို့ တီကိုဆားနဲ့တို့သလို ကြောက်လိုက်ကြတာပါလား။ အဲ့ဒါ နင်တို့ မမှန်လို့ပေါ့။ လာပါ။ ဖုန်းကိုင်ပါ။ ဖြေပါ။ ဒါတော့ မဖြေရဲဘူး။ သူများအိမ်ကြတော့ ပိုင်စိုးပိုင်နင် တက်ပြီး ရှာဖွေ မွှေနှောက်နေကြရဲတယ်ပေါ့လေ၊” လို့ ပြောလိုက်တော့……… အဖွားကြီး ဖွမနေနဲ့ ဆိုတဲ့ အသံ နောက်ဆုံး ကြားလိုက်ရပြီး ဖုန်းလုသံ၊ ဖုန်းကြိုးဖြတ်သံ (ကလစ်) ဆို ကြားရပြီး ဖုန်းသံ ပိတ်သွားခဲ့တာကို အခု သူမတူအကျဉ်းသားစာအုပ်မှာ မစ္စတာ ရှောင်တာနယ်ရဲ့ ဖုန်းအလုခံရတာကို ဖတ်မိပြီး အလားတူ ပြန်သတိရသွားတာ။

သူမတူ အကျဉ်းသားထဲက အာဏာရှင်ဆိုတာကို ဖတ် တွေ့ပြီးတဲ့နောက် အလားတူ “ကဗျာဆိုတာ” ကို ဒေါ်စု ရေးခဲ့တာလည်း ပြန်သတိရမိတယ်။ “ကဗျာဆိုတာ” ခေါင်းစဉ်နဲ့ ဒီကဗျာ ကို ၂၀၁၁ ဇွန်လ ကတည်း က ကိုလံဘီယာနိုင်ငံမှာကျင်းပတဲ့ အကြိမ် ၂၀ မြောက် နိုင်ငံတကာကဗျာပွဲတော်မှာ ဆရာမင်းထင်ကိုကိုကြီး က ရွတ်ဖို့ ဒေါ်စုကို ရေးစေခဲ့တာ။ ကိုလံဘီယာပွဲမှာ ရွတ်ခဲ့တယ်။ နောက် ၁၀ နှစ်နီးပါးအကြာ မြန်မာပြည်မှာ လေလံဆွဲကြတယ်။ သိန်း ၂၄၀၀ ကျပ်တန် ကဗျာ ဖြစ်သွားတဲ့ ဒေါ်စု ရေးတဲ့ ကဗျာ။

Book Talk :An Unlikely Prisoner: How an eternal optimist found hope in Myanmar’s most notorious jail

For 650 days Sean Turnell was held in Myanmar’s terrifying Insein Prison on the trumped-up charge of being a spy. In his recently released book, An Unlikely Prisoner, he recounts how an impossibly cheerful professor of economics, whose idea of an uncomfortable confrontation was having to tell a student that their essay was ‘not really that good’, ended up in one of the most notorious prisons in Southeast Asia. And how he not only survived his lengthy incarceration, but left with his sense of humor intact, his spirit unbroken and love in his heart.

Erin Murphy, senior fellow with the Center for Strategic and International Studies’ Asia Program, will speak with Sean about his new book, his work on Myanmar, and where he sees the country going.

Sean Turnell is Honorary Professor of Economics at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. He has had a distinguished career in government, banking and academia. Professor Sean Turnell is a devoted economist, and he has interest in areas of public policy, economic transition, economic development, and financial reform. Since the early 2000s, he has worked tirelessly on Myanmar economic and banking issues to bring to the table the best possible practices to help Myanmar with economic reforms and growth. He received his PhD in Economic and a Bachelor of Economics with Honors from Macquarie University.

Erin Murphy is a senior fellow for the Asia Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). She has spent her career in several public and private sector roles, including as an analyst on Asian political and foreign policy issues at the Central Intelligence Agency, director for the Indo-Pacific at the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation, founder and principal of her boutique advisory firm focused on Myanmar, and an English teacher with the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program in Saga, Japan. Murphy received her master’s degree in Japan studies and international economics from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and her bachelor’s degree in international relations and Spanish from Tufts University. She was also a 2017–2018 Hitachi international affairs fellow in Japan with the Council on Foreign Relations. Murphy is also the author of Burmese Haze: US Policy and Myanmar’s Opening-and Closing (Association for Asian Studies, 2022).

Book launch : An Unlikely Prisoner by Lowy Institute Senior Fellow Sean Tunnelling

For 650 days, Sean Turnell was a prisoner of the military junta that has ruled Myanmar since 2021. Incarcerated in some of Myanmar’s most notorious prisons, isolated, ill-treated, and ultimately convicted in a sham trial of effectively being a spy, the descent from his role as chief economic adviser to Myanmar’s civilian government was a steep one. From helping to design policies to entrench democracy and help make Myanmar the last and best of the Asian ‘tigers’, his task became one of simple and desperate survival. In An Unlikely Prisoner, Sean recounts how he not only survived his lengthy incarceration but left with his sense of humour intact and his spirit unbroken.

We were joined in conversation with the author, Dr Sean Turnell, moderated by Lowy Institute Research Director Hervé Lemahieu, with questions from the audience.

Dr Sean Turnell is a Senior Fellow in the Southeast Asia Program at the Lowy Institute, covering developments in Myanmar, the wider region, and international economic issues. Prior to his appointment as chief economic adviser to Myanmar’s civilian government, he was a Professor of Economics at Macquarie University, and a senior analyst at the Reserve Bank of Australia.

We know Aung San Suu Kyi as “a golden bird in a cage”; she is a valuable icon representing freedom and democracy of which the suppressed population of Burma much hope for. In the West she stands out as a symbol of peace and reconciliation, she has been awarded countless prizes for her effort, among them the Nobel Peace Prize. But who is the person and woman behind it all? In this film her close family, friends and close colleagues tell about a daughter, a wife, a friend, a mother, a rebel – that early in life met deep grief and deprivation.

Aung San Suu Kyi is known first and foremost as the political opposition leader at the centre of 20 years of social unrest and turmoil in Burma. What many do not know is that she started out as a British housewife in the upper echelons of Oxford society before she went back to her oppressed homeland and joined the struggle for freedom. Since her return she was held under house arrest for fifteen out of twenty-one years during which she had minimal contact with her family and closest relations. ‘Lady of No Fear’ offers a close-up of the freedom fighting woman Aung San Suu Kyi and her husband, ‘her knight in shining armour’ Dr Michael Aris, who died on his 53rd birthday in 1999, still unable to see his wife. Together they gave up their normal life and marriage for the cause of freedom in Burma. She comes across as charming, determined and stoical in her decision to fight for her country at the expense of her family.
The focus is on the personal consequences of such powerful idealism and conviction that the current regime can be toppled by peaceful means. The film is a tribute to the woman at the heart of the rebellion, her steadfast husband and supporter, and not least to Gandhi’s vision of non-violent civic resistance.

A non-violent freedom fighter? A war crimes apologist? Or is she something in between? Aung San Suu Kyi’s decades-long, non-violent struggle for democracy made her a hero around the world. But once appointed to office, many say her leadership, has been disappointing.

Born on June 19th, 1945, in what was then Rangoon, Burma, Aung San Suu Kyi was destined to be defiant from the start.

Her father was none other than Aung San — the former military general who negotiated Burma’s independence from the British in 1947. He became known as a national hero, and the founder of modern-day Myanmar, which was then known as Burma.

But in 1947, when Suu Kyi was just 2 years old, everything changed. Her father was assassinated by a rival politician.

She went on to graduate from high school in 1964, and then studied with the global elite at Oxford University. There she met her to-be husband. Years later they settled in the United Kingdom, where they had two sons.

this time, Suu Kyi continued to watch as her country was sinking further into dictatorship.

After nationwide protests against the one-party rule and the military dictatorship culminated in what later became known as the 8/8/88 Uprising protesters were in search of a leader. They looked to the then 43-year-old Suu Kyi to fill the shoes of her father — as a fighter for Burmese democracy.

And that’s exactly what she did
