Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, State Counsellor of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, delivered the 43rd Singapore Lecture, entitled “Myanmar’s Democratic Transition: Challenges and Way Forward”.
The Singapore Lecture is one of the intellectual highlights of Singapore. It provides an opportunity for distinguished statesmen and leaders to reach a wider audience in Singapore. The presence of such eminent personalities will allow members of the civil service, business community, diplomatic corps, academic community, media, and other interested parties, the opportunity to hear from leading world figures speak on topics of international and regional interest.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, State Counsellor of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, delivered the 43rd Singapore Lecture on 21 August 2018, while on a four-day working visit to Singapore.
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi shared on Myanmar’s political transitions and the major priorities of the NLD government.
Tuesday, 21 August 2018 – Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, State Counsellor of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, delivered the 43rd Singapore Lecture while on a four-day working visit to Singapore. She began her lecture with a brief history of the three major political transitions that Myanmar had gone through and is currently undergoing, namely, from colonial rule to independence; from parliamentary democracy to military dictatorship; and currently, from military dictatorship to democracy.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi reiterated her government’s efforts at peace and national reconciliation and the need for peace in Rakhine. She outlined the steps that have been taken by her government to deal with the issues in Rakhine. With respect to the repatriation of the Rohingya, she described the memoranda of understanding between Bangladesh and Myanmar, and the UN, as well as the various initiatives that have been set up to receive returnees. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi also mentioned that 81 out of the 88 recommendations of the Kofi Annan Advisory Committee have been implemented.
At this point Daw Aung San Suu Kyi paid tribute to Dr Kofi Annan for his generosity and constructive approach which exemplified the principles and values on which the UN was founded.
With regard to foreign direct investment, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi spoke about the implementation of business friendly laws and regulations. In addition, she spoke about national priorities such as the building of roads and electrification, health and education. She provided figures showing the increase in the number of midwives, literacy and school enrolment rates. Finally, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi emphasised that amendments to the constitution through negotiation will be necessary for genuine and long-lasting democratic transition.

DPM and Coordinating Minister for National Security, Mr Teo Chee Hean chaired and moderated the question and answer session after Daw Suu’s lecture, a candid session of exchanges with questions from students, academics and business people ranging from business environment, education, politics and humanitarian issues. There was much laughter amidst the exchange of perspectives.
At the end of the lecture, Professor Wang Gungwu, Chairman Board of Trustees of the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute, and Mr Choi Shing Kwok, Director, ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute; presented Daw Suu with a pottery piece crafted by one of Singapore’s foremost potters, Mr Chua Soo Kim, entitled “Sky, Forest, Green Land. “. The Sky, Forest, Green Land. is part of his Blue Planet series and is inspired by the colours of nature.

Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi said the case brought against her country at the World Court was “incomplete and misleading” as she began her defence to accusations of genocide against the Rohingya Muslim minority on Wednesday.
Suu Kyi, once feted in the West as a heroine of democracy, spoke for about 30 minutes at the courtroom in The Hague in defence of the actions of the Myanmar military, which she said did not constitute genocide.
In three days of hearings this week, judges are hearing the first phase of the case: Gambia’s request for “provisional measures” – the equivalent of a restraining order against Myanmar to protect the Rohingya population until the case is heard in full
More than 730,000 Rohingya fled Myanmar to Bangladesh after the military launched a crackdown in western Rakhine state in August 2017.

On Friday, September 28, The Asia Foundation hosted Nobel laureate, democracy icon, and elected parliamentarian of Burma (also known as Myanmar), Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, for an invitation-only event in San Francisco. This marked her first public remarks in the Bay Area, and immediately followed a meeting with Asia Foundation president David D. Arnold and the organization’s leadership.

တစ်ကယ်ဆို စစ်ပွဲမှာ ကျိန်စာဆိုတာထက် ငြိမ်း ချမ်းရေးရဖို့ သစ္စာဆိုတာကို ပိုကြိုက်တယ်။ မိစ္ဆာတွေကိုနှင်ဖို့ သံပုံးတီးတာထက် ပရိတ်ရွတ်တာ ပိုထိပါတယ်။
သူတို့မသိလို့ပါ။ အများအတွက် အသက်ရှင်ရတာ သိပ်ကျေနပ်စရာကောင်းတာကို။
ဒါဗိုလ်ချုပ်သမီးလို့ ကလေးတွေကို မိဘတွေကပြောပြတာ ကျမအတွက်တော့ သေရာပါပီတိစကားပဲ။
ကျမတည်ဆောက်ချင်တာ တစ်မိသားစုမဟုတ်ဘူး။ ပြည်ထောင်စုမိသားစုပဲ။
တစ်နေ့မှာ ဒါတို့မြေလို့ လွတ်လပ်စွာခရီးသွာနိုင်ချိန် လုံခြုံစွာနဲ့ အိမ်ကိုယ်စီမှာငြိမ်းချမ်းစွာ အိပ် စက်အနားယူနိုင်ချိန် အကြောက်တရားတွေကင်းဝေးပြီး တရားမျှတမှုတွေ မြဲမြံလာတဲ့အထိ ကျမရှိနေပေးမယ်။
