Remembrances: My Days at IHE , and

” Visiting a Singaporean Friend of IHE Alumni and His Family “

Sometimes I visited a Singaporean friend ,Mr Pang , in Singapore who was my colleague and a friend when we studied together at IHE in 1982-83 in the Netherlands .

This time he invited me to his home for a dinner party gathering with our two families on 13 November 2013 . We talked a lot and remembrances of our unforgettable young students days studying for one year in the Netherlands in a long time of 30 years ago.

I remembered him at Delft that sometimes he was accompanied by his wife and a small baby girl of his daughter ( now she was a tall lady in the middle with her two young brothers in the photo) that my Singaporean friend lived with his family .Sometimes I remembered him with his wife accompanying her walking little baby girl daughter together on the streets of Delft or at our IHE ,at Oude Delft 95 .
He told us that he even bought an old used car in the Netherlands for his travel in the country around .I also remembered him that he used a pocket programmable calculator invented in those days by Sharp . Note book or lap top computers had not existed yet in those days while even Bill Gate in USA was just playing with a Sinclair ZX model ,computer- like programmable small console gadget , invented by Sir .Sinclair of London,UK ,of which B&W screen display could be shown on TV and small cassette tape and recorder was used as a storage media . Sinclair ZX and later ZX Spectrum programmable note book computer color models were widely sold in the shopping malls in the Netherlands in those days of our study in 1982-83 when I was using just a simple pocket Casio scientific calculator only.

Now we both are old enough that we both retired from our respective government services .He was still working in an international firm comprising of retired senior engineers mostly from PUB of Singapore .
I was also working at an IHE- alumni-friend’ s company ,NEPS , which comprised of our retired senior engineers from Irrigation Department .

We were in the same group of hydraulic engineering course at IHE ,Delft ,the Netherlands majoring ” Hydraulic Works in Deltaic / Lowland Areas ” that I am now still involved in some kinds of engineering works and integrated water resources management works in Ayeyarwady delta of our country .

One of another near and dear close friend in those days at IHE was Mr Tu of Vietnam .whom I met him several times later in international conferences ,workshops and seminars held in all around the world including Myanmar and other Asian countries, and once in World Water Week in Stockholm ,Sweden . In one last year ,we three friends met in Singapore also with my families to meet my two friends .

I could not forget our course work project in the IHE,Delft ,Netherlands in 1982-83 that we friends had heavily and energetically worked together to achieve a thesis report at the end of our course .
Our title of project thesis or course works was entitled ” Closing Asam bay in Korea”

I took responsibility of designing a stone dyke to be constructed in the fast flowing currents of sea for closing the bay by different sizes of protective stones with proper revetments based on my knowledges gained at our study for our lecture ,” closing tidal basins “.

Every week we all students of our team had a presentation section for our weekly individual accomplishment for our team work of thesis title ,loudly discussing ,arguing,advising ,commenting and concluding for next step forward.It was really a nice and valuable study periods for all of us in the Netherlands .We shared our knowledges gained at IHE among us .

Mr Pang of Singaporean was so clever and wise enough that he took responsibility for the planning ,design and formulation of a structural foundation works by geotechnical approaches for the major drainage sluice structure to be constructed on the sea dyke .
It was no wonder that there were many underground engineering infrastructural works ( a lot of underground cables ,large underground drainage canal tubes collecting surface drains , networks of MRT underground mass rapid transport services) performed in Singapore today applying geotechnical techniques by Singaporean engineers .My friend might be familiar with geotechnical engineering since our days at Delft in 1982-83 .

Another active friend was from Japan .named Mr.Shiota ,who could not be connected by me in these days and we did not have any contact with him how he was doing in his later days after our study at IHE,Delft,the Netherlands .In our team work ,he took responsibility to design a sluice gate structure together with a navigational lock gate .
He also did quite well for his duty of works.We all young students of those days at IHE were very energetic and active in doing our respective works and we met every week of the year for out team work.

Our course leader mentor ,Mr De Heer was very much satisfied with us all for his assignment and assistance.

Another best friend of me was Mr .Tu of Vietnam .He was really a friend near and dear to me among my many other Asian friends .He did the rest of the some other important things for our hydraulic structure works .

Other friends in our branch b-2 for Hydraulic Works in Deltaic/ Lowland Area were two men from Bangladesh and one from South Korea who did some other remaining works of our team .

Any how we all did our works quite well and we all satisfied our accomplishment in our study period of 1982-83 at IHE ,Oude Delft 95,in the Netherlands in our good old those days .

of Oude Delft 95, with Mr Mosterman the rector of IHE and my friends .
