This is an article by a retired Director / engineer,U Htwe Myint the advisor, from Irrigation Department .
Recently I inspected a pond managed by his simple method of storing additional water in a pond located in Dala ,Yangon .
Surprising results were seen by me in my inspection tour in that area.

Prevention of Storage Water Losses Due To Evaporation Within the Drinking Water Pond .

On last weekend holiday I have a visit to inspect and monitor one of the drinking water ponds in Yar Za Thin Gyan quarter located in Da La ,a town in opposite of Yangon City .

Da La was famous for its shortages of drinking water supply in some years of summer dry season .

One of my senior engineer and once the adviser to the minister of Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry ,U Htwe Myint , brain-stormed himself for the ponds at Dhala to get sufficient water supply for the local population in Da La .

He wrote an article on this local ponds and water storage issues and we published his important article on July issue of EERi Monthly magazine in which I am one of the advisory water resources professional member to the magazine .

There were two simple ways to increase water storage inside the pond.
(1)
For conventional method of rain water harvesting ,provision of extra rain water collection roof by plastic turpolin in sheets around the top of the pond bund to increase some rain catchment area was constructed .

(2)
For losses of water in both dry days of wet season and summer seasons a perforated synthetic green cover ( as used in agriculture) over the pond surface was laid on some floating plastic pots and bamboos .

It served for both raining season to collect water and to prevent evaporation losses by sun and wind speed .

The method is just so simple and easy that many lay men or any water professionals neglected and forgot the idea and concept to apply .

I inspected and monitered the said pond and one of the media news reporter followed me to see my senior advisor’s accomplishment for rainwater harvesting together with preventing of evaporation losses within the drinking water ponds .
I have also a meeting with some local people and leader who lived there mentioning our ideas and support to the drinking water shortages in summer .

After two days of my visit to the pond ,there were about 500 possibly Myanmar interested citizens viewed the DaLa pond news on Democratic Voice of Burma ( DVB TV when the news media broadcasted recently .

Recently last month of March 2015, when I inquired to a person concerning the innovative works of rain water harvesting and preventing water losses in a drinking water pond in Dhala brainstormed by us engineers , I found out that our test pond has got.more abundant water stored now than any other dried up ponds in Dhala ,in Yqngon .

I just monitored and follow up our works there .
Here is my findings from another source.

Yesterday I happened to watch a TV news broadcast by Kamayut Media showing the severe situation of drying up of drinking water ponds in Dhala outcrying by people there as before and as usual and as always .
In Myanmar April is the driest month of every year through out the country.

Same old story as usual in the past and yearly always .
Public ,authorities and even some relevant engineers aware the flood in wet rainy season , aware the drought when ponds and lakes dried up in summer season .

No body aware to tackle these disasters in advance before rainy season or summer season.

But we Myanmar Buddhist are generous and eager enough to donate some foods and clothing when in flood and some drinking water bottles when in summer drought for just an instant of a year.

Nobody but any body considered how to manage these problems to remedy for years to come .

We had frequently heard of the same old stories of shrinking water bodies in Inlay in summer .

Almost nobody had in mind how to restore water in Inlay for summer drought .

Almost all of the NGOs and even relevant government authorities emphasized on other things rather than to store and restore water in Inlay lake by any means of engineering solutions .

Drinking Water Ponds in Dhala,Yangon ,today

In watching the Kamayut Media TV news of the present situation of drinking water ponds in Dhala ,I found out our test pond still full of water where people were fetching water from this pond that we had tried our best to store more water, in a time of climate change .

But I did not see any one who can said of the status of this pond with enough water where we had tested by covering the surface not to lost water due to evaporation and water harvesting by extra roofing over the bund of this pond . Now the result is that they can fetch more water there today.
On the Kamayut TV ( any one can search online ) one man interviewed said of the worst status of drinking water in Dhala saying and outcrying the dried up of ponds rather than they can fetch water in our test pond of more water storage for them.
